In the south of Italy hides a beautiful destination that most likely will make it to the list of most preferred spots to visit by tourists from all over the world.
It is the Amalfi Coast, a coast stretch within Campania, that connects Positano situated in the west with Vietri sul Maria located in the east.
Within the province Salerno we can find a small village called
Amalfi.
This
Amalfi Coast has a length of about 70 kilometer and is situated in
the southern part of the boot shaped country. Running all the way to
Positano, which is often refered to as the pearl of the divine shore,
Amalfi has become known for the sometimes pretty steep coastline, with
ravines and cliffs which fall to sea-level, as well as for the
beautiful sandy beaches which have already attracted many tourists for
years. A lot of the villages along the Amalfi Coast have
preserved their culinary specialities, which quite commonly is based on
fresh seafood, which every day is being caught by the local fishermen.
A few dishes one has to try when visiting the area include the Cetara
salted sauce made from anchovy, from Minori the mouth watering hand
made pasta and the piennolo tomatoes which are cultivated in Scala. You
should really try to visit the inIand group of villages in the
mountains called Tramonti, which locates the region's vineyards. Here
you are able to try some of the tastful local wines. This region is
just as well recognized for its dairy products, in particular the
fiordilatte cheese. Probably among some of the best known places on
the Amalfi Coast is Positano. In most literature and by lots of
visitors who have enjoyed its charms it is highly appreciated. While
most people see its beach as the main attraction, it is absolutely
worthwhile to discover the historic town. Picture yourself wandering
through its maze of the many narrow and winding alleys, which sometimes
are pacted with shops selling mainly items made locally - like the
typical linen dresses and not to forget limoncello, a delicious local
liqueur. Being a small village, there are surprisingly many churches
one can visit, as well as reminiscence of which was once a coastal
defence set up to protect against the many attacks from pirates, the
fortified towers.
Besides its beauty, this region is just as well recognized for its
exquisite kitchen, and a lot of pretty ancient villages that each has
its own speciality.
Some fourhundred meters above the sea level
we find Ravello, a town high up on cliffs which provides for some
amazing views along Amalfi Coast. The place itself has become to some
extent quite popular for celebrity spotting, as hollywood stars and
v.i.p.´s such as Greta Garbo, Barbara Streisand and even John F.
Kennedy have had their holidays here.
Some of the most attractive buildings in Ravello are many of the
private properties. There is one in particular of interest: the Villa
la Rondinaia, which was where Gore Vidal, the american writer, used to
live until not so many years ago. A few of the once private residences
can actually be visited. Of course well known is the Villa Rufolo,
which has a really impressive terrace offering a nice sea view, as well
as marvellous gardens, where each year the Wagner festival is being
held.
And when in Italy, one can of course not leave without having tried
their world renowed pizza. The local pizza makers of Tramonti
especially know how to make some the of the best.
For your children there is the Grotta La Porta, which is a cave within
the cliffs. From the harbor at Positano you can take several boat trips
along the coastline, which will bring you to the three rocky islands
Gallo Lungo, Rotonda and Castelluccio.
It is highly likely that you do not want to stay in just one place, but prefer to travel around and explore more of the marvels of the Amalfi Coast. For instance the coast line stretching from Punta Campanella all the way to Positano has areas that are of high natural value for both geological and also environmental specificities. We already touched on the array of stunning sea views of Positano, and can add to that Li Galli and Capri.
The
scenery towards the sea seems to constantly change as a result of the
existence of the barren and bare nature of many impressive steep
slopes. It ressembles a lot the type of coastlines which are pacted
with bayes and coves whcih can only be reached over sea. It will give
the people who like to sail in these waters a profound feeling of
isolation yet at the same time a close contact with nature. The
landscape is characterized
by many settlements which are scattered throughout the valleys which in
turn are sloping down reaching out to the sea. Large green areas are
scattered throughout, providing for a impressive artwork made by nature
and man together.
Italy as a country, and the Amalfi region in particular is blessed with a mild, warm climate, with many sunny days, and is shielded from hard winds. It provides for a privileged environment, and it is of course not a surprise nor a coincidence that many if not all urban settlements have their roots of high medieval origin. This dates back to a era where things like security and the capability of defense were vital factors when creating a settlement.
Over time history has left its trails on the Amalfi Coast, as it is filled with fortifications and towers - from Massalubrense to Salerno. The remains of the castle has become home as the capital of the province, and the center of a broader contextual territory. It is in some way sad to see that the numerous tourist sites which have arrisen during the last twenty years have significantly changed the spitit of this lovely coastal area. Fortunately many of Amalfi coast entities have been kept their original old charm over many hundreds of years. Due to the never ending relationship between the region and the vast beauty of the artistical and cultural heritage, we can all still enjoy the glorious past. The population show admirable creativity and sensitivity in their art of crafting delicate ceramics, processing handmade paper, and weaving chestnut baskets.
In the caves of Amalfi Positano - which is named the door by many - are some of the most ancient population. In historical times the Amalfi Coast showed a forest cover with no built-up areas, the sources of those ages speak only of the three small rocks, now called Li Galli and ancient Sirenum Petrae, held at the home of Homer's sirens whose cult Sorrento was dedicated at a sanctuary. But these houses were like those of Minori, Positano, Li Galli and the small island, accessible only by sea and of members of the imperial court that at the time of Augustus and Tiberius, made frequent visits to nearby Capri.
